How to tell if an ATM has a skimmer.

Overlay skimmers and pinhole cameras are easy to miss and quick to install. Here's the physical check that catches most of them — and how the free SkimGuard app scans the ATM's Bluetooth before you insert your card.

SkimGuard detects skimmers that transmit a Bluetooth signal. A clear result is not a guarantee that a terminal is safe — it cannot detect a purely mechanical or non-transmitting skimmer. Always check the card reader physically as well.

What to look for

Overlay skimmers and pinhole cameras.

Most ATM skimming uses two parts working together. An overlay skimmer is a thin false front that clips over the real card slot and copies your card's magnetic stripe as it feeds through. A tiny pinhole camera — hidden in a fake panel above the screen, a brochure holder, or near the cash slot — films your fingers as you type your PIN. Together they give a thief everything they need. Increasingly, the skimmer also broadcasts the stolen data over Bluetooth, which is what SkimGuard listens for.

The physical check

  1. Wiggle the card slot and keypad. Real components are rigid. An overlay skimmer or fake keypad clips on and tends to feel loose, thick, or slightly raised.
  2. Compare it to a neighboring ATM if there is one. A mismatched color, an oversized bezel, or a slot that sticks out is a warning sign.
  3. Scan for a hidden camera. Look for a pinhole or an out-of-place plastic panel above the screen or beside the cash dispenser.
  4. Always cover the keypad with your other hand as you enter your PIN — it defeats the camera even if you missed the skimmer.

Choose the machine, not just the check

Prefer an ATM inside a bank branch or lobby. They're watched by staff and cameras and are much harder to tamper with than standalone machines at gas stations, convenience stores, and tourist areas — which are targeted far more often. Use a credit card where possible, and turn on your bank's transaction alerts.

  • 🟡 Warning — worth a closer look before you use it.
  • 🔴 Alert — a likely skimmer signature nearby. Use a different machine.

Anonymized results feed the public community safety map (your home scans stay private and are never published). Remember: if SkimGuard has never seen an ATM, it returns no data — unknown, not safe.
