How to tell if an ATM has a skimmer.

Fake card slots and tiny hidden cameras are easy to miss and quick to put on. Here's the check that catches most of them, and how the free SkimGuard app checks the ATM before you put your card in.

The fake slot

A thin cover clips over the real card slot and copies your card as it goes in.

The hidden camera

A tiny camera above the screen or near the cash slot films your PIN.

The wireless part

More and more often, the skimmer sends the stolen data over a wireless signal. That's what SkimGuard listens for.

The physical check

Before you put your card in.

  1. Wiggle the slot and keypadReal parts are solid. A fake slot or keypad tends to feel loose, thick or raised.
  2. Compare it to the next machineIf there's another ATM nearby, look for a different color, a bigger slot, or a part that sticks out.
  3. Look for a cameraCheck for a pinhole or an odd plastic strip above the screen or beside the cash slot.
  4. Cover the keypadShield your PIN with your other hand. It beats the camera even if you missed the skimmer.

  6. Choose the machineATMs inside a bank are watched by staff and cameras. Standalone machines at gas stations, shops and tourist spots are targeted much more often.

Use a credit card where you can, and turn on your bank's transaction alerts so you hear about a strange charge right away.

How the free app helps

Check the ATM before you put your card in.

  • 🟢 Good: checked, and nothing suspicious found. A good sign, not a guarantee.
  • 🟡 Warning: something worth a closer look before you pay.
  • 🔴 Alert: a likely skimmer nearby. Use a different machine, or pay inside.

Android phones can pick up a few older kinds of skimmer that iPhones can't, because Apple limits what iPhone apps can listen for.

Anonymous results go on the free public safety map. Checks at your home stay private and are never shown.

"No data" doesn't mean safe. If nobody has checked a place yet, SkimGuard has nothing to tell you. Coverage grows as more people check, and it's thinner in rural areas. When in doubt, look and tug.

What the app can find

  • Skimmers that send stolen card data over a wireless signal, which most newer ones do.
  • Results from other people's checks nearby, on the free map.

What it can't find

  • Skimmers that don't send a signal, like some fake card slots. Keep looking and tugging too.
  • An all-clear means nothing was found. It is not a guarantee.
