In retail, the threat is the overlay and the swap.

A grocery or convenience checkout isn't a locked fuel cabinet with a hidden radio inside. The attack is a thin overlay pressed over the card slot, or a whole terminal swapped for a look-alike. On an unattended fuel dispenser, the classic attack is a skimmer wired inside a locked panel that quietly transmits. A staffed checkout is a different problem: an overlay slipped over the card slot in seconds while a lane is busy, or a substituted terminal swapped for one that looks identical. Neither has to broadcast anything.

So the retail defense can't lean on a wireless scan. A clear scan means nothing was detected, not that a reader is safe. What actually catches an overlay or a swap is a person looking at the right thing, guided by the record of what was there before — and that's what SkimGuard is built to make fast and repeatable across a floor full of lanes.

How SkimGuard catches it

A serial re-read, a reference photo, and a record.

1. Re-read the serial — catch a swap. At the start of an inspection the app re-reads the terminal's serial and compares it to the device we expect in that lane. A mismatch is flagged as a substitution or a wrong-slot pick, with a mandatory reason. It's recorded as a first-class inventory event and never silently fails the inspection — a person decides what happened.

2. Compare against a reference photo — catch an overlay. Each reader has a stored reference image. The inspector compares the current reader against it; the on-device image comparison is an assist that highlights a difference, never a verdict. A raised bezel, an added lip over the slot, a colour or seam that changed — the person judges it.

3. Log every check. Each lane's inspection is saved with who did it, when, and the outcome, on a schedule you set. That record is the point: it's what turns a walk-around into evidence.

Grocery and convenience retail has the hard version of the inventory problem: a dozen or more readers per store, self-checkout banks, and staff who change.
