Where SkimGuard works

SkimGuard scans anywhere there is a payment terminal. Beyond the gas pumps, ATMs, and checkout lanes most often associated with skimming, that includes bars, restaurants, hotels, casinos, movie theaters, and social and event venues — stadiums, concert halls, festivals, and nightlife. Those venues share a condition that makes them worth a scan: people pay there while distracted — in a crowd, in a rush, socially occupied, often at night, and often at a terminal that is temporary or unattended. Distraction is precisely when a compromised reader goes unnoticed. This is the same scan everywhere; there is no venue-specific mode.

Accuracy note for reporters: SkimGuard detects skimmers that transmit a Bluetooth signal. It cannot detect a purely mechanical or non-transmitting skimmer, so a clear result means nothing was detected — not that a terminal is guaranteed safe.

Joe Gilkey

Founder & CEO, SkimGuard

Joe is the founder of SkimGuard. Prior to SkimGuard, he spent five years as Head of IT at King Kullen Grocery — a regional grocery chain with 25+ locations — where he owned payment terminal infrastructure and the cybersecurity perimeter across the chain. His earlier engineering career includes Principal Engineer at NAPCO Security Technologies, Senior Engineer at Clever Devices, and Senior Engineer at Clear.

He built SkimGuard solo, bootstrapped, after recognizing that the side with operational visibility into card skimming had no financial incentive to detect it, while the side bearing the losses had no visibility.
